Landmarks Community Capital Corporation Provides Loan to Three Rivers Youth, for “At Risk Youth”
by Dr. Howard B. Slaughter, Jr., CEO and President, LCCC
April 3, 2009
PHLF NewsDr. Howard B. Slaughter, Jr., Chief Executive Officer of Landmarks Community Capital Corporation (LCCC) announced its largest loan to date through its Urban Economic Loan Fund of $1,350,000 to Three Rivers Youth for the acquisition and restoration of the new headquarters of Three Rivers Youth located at 6117 Broad Street, during a ribbon cutting ceremony. Dr. Slaughter said, “We are pleased to make this loan to Three Rivers Youth, during these difficult financial times, so they are able to expand their offices, and continue to provide their much needed services to the families of Western Pennsylvania, and continue making a difference in the lives of youth they serve.”
“Landmarks Community Capital Corporation’s financial investment in Three Rivers Youth enabled us to reinvest in ourselves,” said Peggy Harris, President & CEO of Three Rivers Youth. “As we continue our 129 year old mission, we do so by planting roots in the East End, another one of Pittsburgh’s important neighborhoods, where our presence will make a substantiative difference. Our excitement in opening a new chapter in our history is beyond measure and we are grateful for the support of Landmarks Community Capital Corporation and for many deep and longstanding partners in this community.”
State Senator Jim Ferlo said, “I give credit to Howard Slaughter and Landmarks Community Capital Corporation, for making a strategic investment in neighborhood growth and youth development through this loan to Three Rivers Youth, which provides high-quality services to some of our most vulnerable members of society – runaway and homeless young people. Their quality of life and future success is the real bottom line.”
State Representative Joseph Preston said, “No one is prepared to help at-risk youth overcome the complex issues that confront them better than Three Rivers Youth. It is imperative that it continues its rich history of providing great services and programs not only to these youth, but to our community and to those youth that will follow in coming years. ”
Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said, “Three Rivers Youth represents the best of agencies that supports with great care and concern, at risk youth in the City of Pittsburgh. I am excited that this grand opening is a strong indication that the work of Three Rivers Youth will continue to make a significant positive difference for our great city. This new facility will allow for greater expansion and more sustained efforts that will benefit the individuals served, families, the community and the city; and for that I am pleased to support their efforts.”

Building Pride and Character through City Tours
by Louise Sturgess, Executive Director
April 2, 2009
PHLF NewsBy April 30, eleven Pittsburgh Public Schools will have participated in Landmarks’ Building Pride/Building Character city tour, described by a teacher as “one of the best [field trips] ever.” The innovative educational program is sponsored through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program and is funded through contributions Landmarks received in the fall of 2008 from six corporations: PNC Bank; Allegheny Technologies, Inc.; Frank B. Fuhrer Wholesale Company; ESB Bank; Bridges & Company, Inc.; and Hefren-Tillotson, Inc.
Third-grade students explore Pittsburgh on board Molly’s Trolleys, with Landmarks’ staff, docents, and college interns serving as tour guides. The day-long tour includes five stops: the City-County Building, Allegheny County Courthouse, Fort Pitt Museum, Fort Pitt Block House, and Duquesne Incline.
Students and teachers are full of praise for the program. One student wrote: “My favorite time was everything we did, and everything we saw.” A teacher wrote that “PHLF always provides the most valuable, well-organized, standards-related programs/trips to our students. We love working with them and plan to continue our partnership in the future. Thank you!”
PHLF will be renewing its application with the State for the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program and encourages corporations to continue giving. If you are interested in donating to the EITC program, contact Louise Sturgess at PHLF: louise@phlf.org.
