Architectural Apprenticeship
The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation offers an Architectural Apprenticeship through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit for high school students in the gifted and talented program who are interested in pursuing a career in architecture, urban planning, or historic preservation.
Students are excused once a month from regular classes to attend the Architectural Apprenticeship. The course consists of five sessions in the fall, each from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Students tour Downtown Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and Homestead; they also meet with architects and complete a design project.
High school students who have registered through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit will be participating in the fall session of PHLF’s Architecture Apprenticeship Program. During five full-day sessions, participants (1) tour Homestead, CMU, and Downtown Pittsburgh; (2) meet with architects; and (3) develop and present their design solutions for a vacant lot in Homestead, PA.
By the end of the course, students are more familiar with the Pittsburgh region and have been introduced to key principles in urban planning and historic preservation, the goals of architecture, and the design process.
