The Mexican War Streets section of the North Side is one of Pittsburgh’s most colorful neighborhoods—literally and figuratively. On this tour, you will learn about the area’s history, including the creation of Allegheny Commons and the Mexican War Streets, and become familiar with Victorian architectural styles and terminology. As you stroll a neighborhood of well-cared-for historic buildings, docents will explain how two organizations—the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation and the Mexican War Streets Society—worked together and employed historic preservation strategies to reverse decades of neighborhood decline and disinvestment. Preservation continues to take center stage in the tour as we hear about imaginative individuals who have creatively repurposed historic structures to create vital, nationally acclaimed cultural resources.

Tour meeting point: In Allegheny Commons, across from St. Peter’s Church (Church is at 720 Arch Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212)

Tour ending point: Palo Alto Street and West North Avenue, near the National Aviary (Aviary is at 700 Arch Street)

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. Dress for the weather (PHLF tours proceed rain or shine!), and wear comfortable shoes. By purchasing a ticket for this tour, you acknowledge that you are physically able to undertake the tour, assume all personal risk during the tour, consent to being photographed during the tour, and permit PHLF to use your image in our communications.
