The Homewood Cemetery was founded in 1878 with a purchase of 175 acres of land. This tour will focus on the sections of the Cemetery that were established from its inception until roughly World War I. More than simply sharing stories of the people interred in this historic burial ground, Jennie Benford, the Cemetery’s long-time historian, will discuss the interplay among the Cemetery’s historic landscape, more than a century’s worth of monuments and plantings, and the continuing evolution of the City outside its gates.

Tour meeting point: Dallas Avenue gate to the Cemetery (1599 S. Dallas Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15217), near the flagpole across from the Cemetery’s office and chapel.

Tour ending point: Dallas Avenue gate to the Cemetery

Note: A tour of sections of the Cemetery developed after World War II will take place on October 19. For information and to register, please go to www.phlf.org/events/ and select October 19 on the calendar.

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. Dress for the weather (PHLF tours proceed rain or shine!), and wear comfortable shoes. By purchasing a ticket for this tour, you acknowledge that you are physically able to undertake the tour, assume all personal risk during the tour, consent to being photographed during the tour, and permit PHLF to use your image in our communications.

Accessibility: The Cemetery’s slightly hill terrain might be difficult for people with assistive devices to navigate. If accessibility is a concern for you, please contact Mary Lu Denny (marylu@phlf.org; 412-471-5808, ext. 527) before registering.
