Longfellow, Alden & Harlow Houses in Sewickley, PA (Bus Tour)
September 14, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Saturday, September 14, 2019
1:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Board a mini-bus at St. Stephen’s Church and travel to six homes in Sewickley and Edgeworth boroughs that will be specially opened for our afternoon visit. You’ll see and learn about the work of distinguished architects and interior designers including Longfellow, Alden, & Harlow; Leake & Greene; and Irving & Casson. The tour is a collaboration between PHLF and the Sewickley Valley Historical Society (SVHS). Our tour guides will be Mary Beth Pastorius, a scholar of Longfellow, Alden & Harlow and trustee of both PHLF and SVHS; Joe Zemba, Vice President of SVHS; and Tim Merrill, PHLF docent and SVHS member. In addition, Mary Jane Carpenter, who has extensively studied the life of Frank Alden, will be traveling from Martha’s Vineyard to join us. Longfellow, Alden & Harlow (LAH) established offices in Boston and Pittsburgh, where they designed 140 buildings between 1886 and 1896. Best known as the designers of the original Carnegie Institute in Oakland and the Duquesne Club in downtown Pittsburgh, LAH designed many fine homes in the Pittsburgh region. The homes the firm designed in the Sewickley Valley have been well cared for by successive generations and are a treat to see. We thank the owners for graciously agreeing to open them to us for this special tour.
Fee: $35 for members of PHLF and SVHS; $50 for non-members
