Workshop: Deck Construction 2 of 2

FREEDecks provide outdoor living spaces that are great for barbecues, gatherings, or some quiet book reading in the fresh air. It is essential that best practices in construction are used to build a safe deck. In this workshop, students will build a small sample deck. Students will learn the procedures to build a deck that meets building code regulations and provides a safe outdoor space.

- Deck layout
- Footers
- posts and girders
- Deck Framing
- Types of Decking
- Handrails
- Deck stairs
This lecture is free and open to the public.

About the presenter: Michael R. Wetmiller is the founder of DIY Pittsburgh, Remodeling Consultants & Educators. Michael has a unique background that combines professional experience as both a carpenter and an educator. He created DIY Pittsburgh with a simple mission: Teach homeowners the skills and knowledge needed to remodel their own homes.
Currently a middle school principal, Michael was originally a journeyman carpenter. He has experience in commercial and residential construction and attended a four-year carpenter’s apprenticeship training program in the mid-1990’s. Michael also has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Science in Education from Duquesne University. He worked as a teacher in a Pittsburgh area high school for 6 years before becoming a principal. Michael combined his knowledge as a carpenter with his ability to teach to create DIY Pittsburgh.
