The Penn-Liberty corridor in Downtown Pittsburgh was an important retail and commercial center in the 19th and early 20th centuries and featured excellent examples of Richardsonian Romanesque buildings standing cheek-by-jowl with more modest structures. By the 1970s, however, the area had become blighted and developed an unsavory reputation. This tour focuses on the 14-block area within the district that the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has transformed since 1984 from an area of derelict and underused buildings to a unique variety of venues for the performing and visual arts. Tour leaders will reveal how a combination of historic preservation and new construction has created a destination environment that continues to evolve.
