Oakland Walking Tour: Soldiers & Sailors, Mellon Institute, and Central Catholic

July 25, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Based on the request of several PHLF members, we are leading a walking tour of the Oakland Civic Center that will include tours of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum, Mellon Institute, and Central Catholic High School. Conceived as part of the City Beautiful movement and a center for education and culture for more than a century, the Oakland Civic Center is a place of big gifts and big dreams. Mary Schenley, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Phipps, and the Mellon and Heinz families were among the donors who helped make the dreams of City Public Works Director Edward Manning Bigelow, University of Pittsburgh Chancellor John Bowman, and Developer Franklin Nicola come to life.
2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Meeting Location: Main entrance of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum, 4141 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213
Advance paid reservations required.
This tour is limited to 30 people.
$10 PHLF members
$35 Non-members includes one-year complimentary membership in PHLF.
