The Hamnett Place neighborhood in Wilkinsburg is an example of how historic restoration and preservation can be utilized to help renew a community without displacing residents. Once comprised of mostly vacant and falling-down building structures, the neighborhood experienced a dramatic transition when residents and community activists invited our organization in 2004 to help them think about renewal strategies other than massive demolition. After more than 15 years of involvement, our organization helped invest more than $25 million in the neighborhood through the restoration of single-family houses, grand historic apartment buildings, reclamation of blighted vacant lots that were converted into urban gardens, and the creation of educational space in a former car repair shop and junkyard.
Join us for this tour in which you will learn about how we applied our principles in restoring the distinctive built environment in a neighborhood we later successfully added for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
