Neighborhood Walking Tour: East Liberty Historic District

Explore the layers of history visible in the architecture of this East End neighborhood, which has experienced great swings in its fortunes in the last 125 years. In this tour, you will learn why the neighborhood was once considered Pittsburgh’s “second downtown,” discover its important role in the history of cinema, and see how East Liberty’s historic and architectural legacy has been both preserved and altered in its Historic Commercial District.

You also will hear about how an enormous mid-20^th-century urban renewal project that nearly destroyed East Liberty, and sees how redevelopment in the last fifteen years has rectified some of the earlier project’s tragic mistakes. Juxtaposing traces of East Liberty’s various transformations with a church whose successive buildings have occupied the same site since 1819, this tour will give participants a new appreciation for this resilient neighborhood.

Please arrive 10 minutes before the start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. Dress for the weather (PHLF tours proceed rain or shine!), and wear comfortable shoes.
