From 1950 through the 1960s, Pittsburgh’s Democrat-controlled municipal government, Republican business elite, and the City’s newly formed Urban Redevelopment Authority worked together in an extraordinary collaboration to remake a 23-acre site near the Point into Gateway Center. In this period, known as Pittsburgh’s Renaissance, eleven buildings designed by leading architects of the time were constructed on landscaped plazas, giving new life to the city’s economy.
Join us for this tour and see these buildings and get a view of adjacent Point State Park. Together, the Park and Gateway Center form the Pittsburgh Renaissance Historic District, nominated by PHLF and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
Tour Meeting point: Gateway “T” Subway Station on Stanwix Street near Liberty & Penn Avenues
Tour Ending Point: Four Gateway Center, 444 Liberty Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15222
