A film by Elizabeth Fernea (Produced in 2001)

Landmarks Preservation Resource Center

Directed by Maysoon Pachachi, LIVING WITH THE PAST is a portrait of Darb al –Ahmar, a historic district in Cairo, and a neighborhood in the heart of the Old City.

Across the globe monument preservation often means that surrounding neighborhoods are demolished, and people are displaced. Not so in Cairo, where efforts continue to not only rescue endangered monuments but to improve the standard of living of the affected communities, in this case the people of Darb al-Ahmar.

LIVING WITH THE PAST, follows several restoration projects in Darb al-Ahmar, including: the Great Fate of Bob Zuwayla (1092 A.D.), the Mosque of Emir Qijmas al –Ishaqi (1481 A.D.), the Church of the Virgin (600 A.D.), and the Walls of Saladin (11th and 12th Centuries A.D)

Join us for this exploration of preservation techniques and principles abroad in a context of how old and historic buildings and places can be restored to create meaning and vitality for a modern era.

This screening is free to PHLF members. Click here to learn more about PHLF membership and please join! Non-members: $5
