Established in the late 18th century, Greensburg presents the history of Western Pennsylvania in microcosm. From a small town, it developed into a center of trade and commerce in the early 19th century because of its proximity to transit routes. Later, the area’s abundant coal fueled both local industrialization and growth of the city. Today, the City’s economy revolves around professional services, activities at the County courthouse, and local colleges. Downtown Greensburg has a historic district that includes numerous handsome buildings in typical turn-of-the-19th-century historicizing styles.

Our program will start with a drive-through tour of the Academy Hill Historic District, an 11-block area of homes built for upper- and middle-income families between 1880 and 1948. The featured event will be a docent-guided tour of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art—the cultural gem of the area, and an excellent example of a traditionally styled building accommodating a contemporary addition.

This program will conclude with a reception at a nearby historic home designed Peter Berndtson and Cornelia Brierly.

Tour meeting point: Station Square, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Instructions for parking and meeting the bus will be provided to registrants in advance of the tour. The bus will depart at 12:00 noon sharp.

Tour ending point: Station Square, by 6:30 p.m.

Please arrive 15 minutes before departure time in order to ensure that the bus is loaded expeditiously and the tour gets underway on time. Dress for the weather (PHLF tours proceed rain or shine!), and wear comfortable shoes. By purchasing a ticket for this tour, you acknowledge that you are physically able to undertake the tour, assume all personal risk during the tour, consent to being photographed during the tour, and permit PHLF to use your image in our communications.

Accessibility: The Westmoreland Museum of Art is fully accessible. However, the bus on which we will travel has steps that might be difficult to navigate with assistive equipment. Entrance to the private home we are visiting is preceded by a 90-foot walk up a slightly inclined driveway. If accessibility is a concern for you, please contact Mary Lu Denny (marylu@phlf.org; 412-471-5808, ext. 527) before registering.
