There is plenty of wonderful historic architecture in Pittsburgh, but what about the new? We are experiencing a profusion of shoddy and unsightly new work at a time when national commentaries lament the outpouring of bad architecture more broadly. Still, there is plenty of good design to be had. Pittsburgh apparently just needs to work harder for its share. The trick is to seek out quality architecture and make it a larger part of the local discourse. Of course, key institutions do this already, but more people should join the discussion. This lecture will explore where to look for sources of good architecture and how to advocate for better work in Pittsburgh’s official processes and general culture.
