Join Louise Sturgess, PHLF’s executive director, and Edith Abeyta, founder of Arts Excursions Unlimited, for an urban hike in Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood neighborhood to see how historic landmarks, art, and new design are contributing to Hazelwood’s renewal. Participants will:
––visit four significant historic religious properties (First Hungarian Church, Church of the Good Shepherd, St. Stephen, and Center of Life);
––enjoy treats from the recently-opened La Gourmandine Bakery, and from Alex’s Restaurant, a neighborhood favorite for 40 years;
––discuss several sites associated with the life of Pulitzer-prize-winning playwright August Wilson, since his mother moved the family to Hazelwood in 1958;
––see the Almono site from a distance, where Uber is testing its driverless cars;
––hear about plans/hopes for reusing several vacant historic landmarks, including the former Gladstone School;
––and participate in an art activity along the way, designed by Arts Excursions Unlimited.
