Spring Cleaning: A Guide to Green Cleaning
Chelsea Holmes
Director, Community Education
Women for a Healthy Environment
Tuesday, May 24
6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
May is Allergy Awareness Month. Because of that, Women for a Healthy Environment (WHE) is leading a discussion on how to clean your homes avoiding toxins commonly found in household cleaning products. Unfortunately, in the United States today, cleaning product manufacturers are not required to disclose their ingredients on the product, which means that there are known allergens, asthmagens, carcinogens, and even hormone disruptors lurking in many of our everyday products.
This workshop is designed to raise awareness around potential toxins found in our home environments and to provide community members with the information and resources needed to make informed consumer choices regarding these products.
About the presenter: Chelsea Holmes is director of community education at Women for a Healthy
Environment (WHE). She began her career as a teacher, both in the U.S. and abroad. In 2011, she joined Chatham University’s School of Sustainability to obtain her Master’s degree in Food Studies. While at Chatham, Chelsea worked at Women for a Healthy Environment, and completed an internship
with Clean Plates, New York City.
Women for a Healthy Environment is a non-profit based in Pittsburgh with a mission of educating and raising awareness of the environmental risk factors that affect public health in our communities. WHE does this through workshops, printed materials and campaigns to teach people the steps to take to protect themselves, their families, and the environment as a whole. By translating scientific information for general consumption, WHE empowers people to make healthy choices for themselves and their families.
