Join us for an illustrated presentation of the photographs and railroad history captured by Frank B. Fairbanks, Jr. (1930-2005) a mechanical engineer who spent his entire adult life riding, documenting, and collecting material from rail lines all over the world.
A former president of Horix Manufacturing Company of Pittsburgh, he logged nearly 200,000 rail miles traveled, a feat surpassed by few other people in the world starting in the 1950s and continuing to the end of his life in 2005. His precision-driven mind enhanced his ability to document his rail trips in a uniquely detailed fashion and the bulk of his work can be found in the Frank B. Fairbanks Rail Transportation Archive in the offices of Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation.
This illustrated lecture will show excerpts of the 35-millimeter color slide section of the archive and Mr. Fairbanks’ trips to the Denver Rio Grande & Western in the late 1950’s and his days of photographing trains in the transition era from steam to diesel in the 1950’s on the Baltimore and Ohio, New York Central, and New Haven Railroads.
