The Homewood Cemetery was founded in 1878 with a purchase of 175 acres of land. Focusing on the less-explored northeastern section of the Cemetery, Jennie Benford, its long-time historian, will share her new perspective on monuments, landscapes, and communities formed after World War II. Expect to see Art Deco monuments and mausoleums, mid-20th-century landscape design experiments, and the re-emergence of highly personal epitaphs. The tour route includes views of newer sections of the Cemetery, including those for Jewish and Muslim communities
Tour meeting point: Homewood Avenue gate to the Cemetery, corner of Homewood Avenue and Edgerton Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA
Tour ending point: Dallas Avenue gate to the Cemetery
Note: A tour of sections of the Cemetery developed between 1878 and World War I will take place on September 28. For information and to register, please go to www.phlf.org/events/ and select September 28 on the calendar.
Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time. Dress for the weather (PHLF tours proceed rain or shine!), and wear comfortable shoes.
