The Rachel Carson Homestead is about 18 miles northeast of Downtown Pittsburgh, in Springdale, PA, along the Allegheny River.
Celebrate Rachel Carson’s birthday by visiting the homestead where she was born 110 years ago, on May 27. Bring your family and friends and arrive anytime between Noon and 4:00 P.M. Bring a blanket and picnic lunch if you like, and enjoy a special guest performance by “Earth Mama” Joyce Rouse, a singer, songwriter, and educator.
Rachel Carson’s birthplace in Springdale stands today largely as a result of Agnes Kinard (1914-2014), who was a trustee of PHLF. After successfully battling various legal and political issues, Agnes co-founded the Rachel Carson Homestead Association in 1975, in cooperation with PHLF and others. She envisioned adapting Rachel Carson’s childhood home for use as a nature and education center––and that mission is being fulfilled today by the Association.
PHLF members and friends are encouraged to join in this free birthday celebration and support the preservation of this National-Register-listed landmark with your attendance. It’s an easy drive to Springdale, and you can always stop for a refreshing treat at Glen’s Frozen Custard on Pittsburgh Street, before or after you tour the homestead! The business has thrived for 60 years: it’s just a bit younger than the homestead.
