This decorative band of circles and pointy arrows is called “egg and dart molding.” The circle is like a bird's egg and the pointy arrow or dart is like a bird's claw. The ancient Greeks used this pattern on temples—and people have been using it ever since. In Pittsburgh you'll find it on the outside of buildings and even inside around elevator doors.
