When George Woods and Thomas Vickroy laid out the street plan for Pittsburgh in 1784, they could not have imagined the numerous transformations that the public center of the plan—Market Square—would experience in the future. Through all the changes in the ensuing 240 years, Market Square has remained an important space Downtown, geographically, economically, and culturally. In this place where historic architecture encounters ongoing change, you will learn about the Square’s history and the preservation work done by PHLF to help revive this area, once threatened by extensive demolition. The tour includes residential, commercial, corporate, and hotel buildings, several of which the U.S. Green Building Council has awarded its highest certifications for environmental sustainability. Together, the sites on the tour demonstrate how the combination of historic preservation and thoughtful new development can create a livable urban environment.
