Do you remember the buildings in which you went to school? Many of us remember outstanding teachers, but the physical environment in which we’re taught also can influence our learning experience. One of Pittsburgh’s many architectural distinctions is its large number of striking public school-buildings. In 1986, PHLF successfully nominated 49 of the Pittsburgh Public School system’s 115 then-extant buildings for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. In this slide presentation, docents will share in-depth looks at nine schools to reveal the marvelous architectural legacy the public school system created between 1850 (before Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh) and 1941.
