From the highway that allows you to zoom past the towns along the Allegheny River, the yellow-brick church sitting on a slight rise above the road might not make a big impression. What’s inside St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church, however, could take one’s breath away: 25 murals, covering every wall of the sanctuary, that speak to matters of the spirit, community, armed conflict among nations, and the experience of Croatian immigrants in Pittsburgh.
The story of the church, the murals, and their creator is the stuff of an epic movie—from an artist born the illegitimate child of Austrian nobility, to a conflagration that destroyed the first church on this site less than 21 years after it was dedicated, to the swift reconstruction and eventual embellishment of the existing church, to the enormous present-day efforts to conserve the murals and stabilize the building. Our tour will be led by staff of, and consultants to, the Society to Save the Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka and will cover all aspects of this truly remarkable place.

Accessibility: St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church has accessible parking and an accessible entrance; all murals are visible from the ground floor of the sanctuary.
