Please join us for a special visit to one of our region’s oldest historical sites: Old St. Luke’s Historic Church, Burial Ground and Gardens, in Carnegie, PA. Originating as a stockade church in 1765, when Pennsylvania was still a British colony, the church and its grounds have endured through the American Revolution, the Civil War, and every other phase of America’s complicated history.

The current building  is the third on the site and was constructed in 1852, possibly to a design by the Scottish-born Philadelphia architect John Notman. After losing its final congregation in 1930, the church was abandoned and nearly disintegrated over the next several decades. Beginning in the 1960s, the church—including its 1823 pipe organ—was painstakingly restored through the exceptionally hard and consistent work of successive groups of volunteers. Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation consulted extensively on the restoration and, in 1976, awarded Old St. Luke’s Church a historic plaque.

The church now serves as a venue for a variety of community purposes. Carved headstones and monuments in its burial ground memorialize dozens of lives lived in the area from the 18th century into the 21st—from the major in King George III’s army who received the land now occupied by the church in 1770, to an infant who lived only one week.

Our comprehensive tour of the site’s history and architecture will be led by members of Friends of Old St. Luke’s, the group that operates and maintains Old St. Luke’s. As a special treat, we will hear a demonstration of the historic pipe organ.
