Henry Hornbostel was one of the most inventive architects working in Pittsburgh in the early 20th century, putting his own creative twist on traditional architectural ideas, embracing new building technology, and often trimming his structures in beautifully wrought terra cotta ornament. His biggest field of play in Pittsburgh was the campus of Carnegie Mellon University (formerly Carnegie Technical Institute), winning the design competition for its master plan in 1904. And perhaps his grandest design for the original campus was the College of Fine Arts (CFA; originally the School of Applied Design), begun in 1912. Complementing its spectacular assemblage of Hornbostel buildings, the University’s Architecture Archives house one of the most significant collections of original Hornbostel documentary materials. These include his design drawings for the buildings on campus.

Join us for a rare opportunity to visit the Architecture Archives to see a selection of drawings of the CFA, followed by an in-depth tour of the building by a faculty member from the School of Architecture. In addition to discussing how Hornbostel’s European trip as a student inspired the design of the College of Fine Art’s Great Hall, she will “decode” the themes and details of this exceptional building.

Tour meeting point:  Lobby of Hunt Library, 4909 Frew Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

Tour ending point:  Great Hall, College of Fine Arts, 4919 Frew Street

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time.
