Join us for a special event at Calvary Episcopal Church in Shadyside, where we will explore the architecture and history of the distinctive building and also experience a Choral Evensong service performed by the Calvary Choir— one of the foremost Episcopal church choirs in the country.
Designed by Boston architect Ralph Adams Cram, one of America’s foremost proponents of the Gothic Revival style, the church was built in 1905-07, and is recognized not only for its awesome architectural aesthetics, but also its extraordinary acoustics. Calvary Episcopal is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
In addition to Calvary, other examples of Cram’s architecture in the Pittsburgh region include First Presbyterian Church (1913-19) in Greensburg; Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church (1926-31) in Homewood; and East Liberty Presbyterian Church (1930-35). First Baptist Church (1909-12) in Oakland was designed by Cram’s firm and partner, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue.
Through this event, participants will get an opportunity to learn about how Cram expressed his architectural ideas through music and liturgy and then experience his singular vision for themselves.
The tour will be led by The Reverend Jonathon Jensen, Rector of the church, and Philip Maye, a member of the church’s Architectural History Committee.
Free parking is available in the church’s parking lot. Free street parking is also available in the neighborhood.
Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time.
This tour is handicap accessible. The tour meeting point is equipped with a ramp.
