Lawrenceville is one of Pittsburgh’s largest and oldest neighborhoods—and, for the last couple decades, has been widely considered one of its coolest. Soon after it was established in 1814, it became the site of a sprawling military arsenal, bits of which can still be seen. By the mid-19th century, industry in the form of oil refining, iron milling, and brewing, among other types of enterprises, dominated the area closest to the river, providing employment and stimulating development of the neighborhood. After declining in the wake of the region’s deindustrialization, Lawrenceville thrives once again.

Much of Lawrenceville’s historic architectural fabric survives, including commercial, institutional, residential, social, and religious buildings that served the working and middle classes. This tour focuses on the neighborhood’s western section, commonly called Lower Lawrenceville. It encompasses the full range of buildings, both historic and more recent, to tell a textured story of this part of the sprawling neighborhood.

Tour meeting point:  Doughboy Square (convergence of Penn Avenue, Butler Street, and 34th Street), Pittsburgh, PA 15201, on the steps beside the sculpture

Tour ending point: St. Augustine Plaza, 230 36th Street, at Sardis Way, Pittsburgh, PA 15201

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time.

Parking: Metered parking is available on the street.

Accessibility:  This tour is accessible to people with handicaps, although there is a slight change in elevation between Penn Avenue and Butler Street that might make wheelchair navigation a bit challenging.
