This new tour will explore the history and evolution of the North Point Breeze neighborhood of George Westinghouse and H.J. Heinz. The mansions and large estates of the Gilded Age have given way to the current diverse, middle-class neighborhood of single-family and multifamily homes, as well as a mixed-use commercial complex. Topics will include the architecture of significant homes and buildings, notable historical residents, the Boulevard Park Plan of Thomas and McPherson Avenues, and the restoration and development of the area now called Rockwell Park. This 24-acre complex was created through re-use of early-20th-century abandoned industrial buildings—including one where Thomas Edison helped to invent a lamp that reduced mine explosions by 70 percent. Proving, as is so often the case in Pittsburgh, that the past is never very far removed from the present.
Tour meeting point: Beside the entrance to Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse, 214 N. Lexington Avenue (where Lexington Ave. and Thomas Blvd. meet in a “T”), Pittsburgh, PA 15208
Tour ending point: Intersection of McPherson Blvd. and Dallas Avenue
Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time.
Accessibility: With the exception of one section that has a moderate incline, the route of this tour is flat terrain.
