Penn Avenue has been described as a “commercial zipper” connecting the East End neighborhoods of Garfield, Friendship, Bloomfield, and Lawrenceville. In Garfield, the avenue is home to a wonderfully creative, eclectic business district that is rooted in the arts. In fact, the arts have been woven into the street’s DNA since 1998, when the Penn Avenue Arts Initiative was initiated to create a supportive environment for artists by renovating blighted, formerly vacant buildings.
The stretch of Penn Avenue from the 4800 block to the 5500 block is now home to arts and cultural organizations ranging from the internationally recognized Pittsburgh Glass Center to the thought-provoking Center for PostNatural History. It also is the place to find a variety of ethnic restaurants, boutiques, architects’ offices, and public art. A lot of public art, scattered along the commercial district, and both celebratory and memorial in nature.
D.S. Kinsell, co-founder of BOOM Concepts and a wellspring of knowledge about the neighborhood’s art, will be co-host of this spirited tour.
