Settlement of what is now Edgewood Borough started as early as 1808 and accelerated with the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s, making commuting to Downtown Pittsburgh and Turtle Creek Valley much easier. By the 1880s, the population and business activity had so increased that residents demanded organized local government. In response, Edgewood Borough was incorporated in 1888, guided by what its leaders called “the Edgewood Idea.” This planning philosophy promoted Victorian elegance in the physical environment; responsible, self-sufficient government; and community institutions to support those who lacked resources. This new tour will visit a mixture of residential spaces and public institutions—physically separated by the very railroad that facilitated the borough’s growth. Participants will see buildings in a wide variety of styles; tour highlights will include a train station designed by prominent Philadelphia architect Frank Furness, an eclectic confection of a residence that is topped by a tower-cum-widow’s walk, and the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.

Tour meeting point: Main entrance to the Edgewood Club, 1 Pennwood Avenue, Edgewood, PA 15218

Tour ending point:  The Edgewood Club

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time.

Accessibility:  The tour route is relatively flat, but the tunnel that connects the two sections of the tour has steep steps to ground level.
