Join us for a very special program at the Thomas Bigham House, in historic Chatham Village. Constructed in 1849, the house is the former home of Thomas James Bigham (1810 to 1884). Bigham was an attorney, a legislator, the owner of two newspapers, and bearer of the nickname “Old Statistics,” among other things—an altogether fascinating person.

Today, though, Bigham is perhaps best known as an abolitionist, and his home most historically significant as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Architect David Vater, a long-time resident of Chatham Village, will share his deep knowledge of the Bigham House’s architecture and history through a slide presentation, followed by a tour of the house. If weather and the grounds’ condition permit, participants will have the opportunity to walk from the house to the point from which fleeing slaves would have seen the home and experienced a sense of refuge, however temporary.

Bigham House is part of the National Register of Historic Places’ Chatham Village Historic District. Our organization awarded it a Historic Landmark Plaque in 1990.

Tour meeting point:  Bigham House, 655 Pennridge Road, Pittsburgh 15211

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time.

Parking: Free parking is available along Pennridge Road and Olympia Road. Please do not block residents’ driveways.
