With the advent of the smartphone, almost anyone can take a pretty good picture. In this environment, what does it mean to be a photographer—and more precisely, an architectural photographer? Over the last 35 years, Pittsburgh native Ed Massery has photographed well over 1000 buildings in this region and throughout the United States, primarily on commission for architectural firms. His pictures do not merely record the buildings’ existence, however, but bring them to life such that the viewer sees what his client considers important about the building or site. Where commissioned projects require a balance between artistry and documentation, Massery’s independent projects give freer rein to his desire to interpret a place and capture something special or fleeting about it.

In this presentation, Massery will talk about how architecture caught his eye, the evolution of his career, and how the transition from analog to digital photography affected his work. The program promises to be thought-provoking for anyone interested in how photography shapes our understanding of buildings.

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the program gets underway on time.

Accessibility: The Frick Fine Arts Building is accessible to people with disabilities. Those requiring wheelchair access or who have difficulty navigating stairs should use the entrance on the Schenley Drive side of the building, across from Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.
