Explore the layers of history visible in the architecture of this East End neighborhood, which has experienced great swings in fortunes in the last 125 years. Learn why the neighborhood was once considered Pittsburgh’s “second downtown,” discover its important role in the history of cinema, and see how East Liberty’s historic and architectural legacy has been both preserved and altered in its Historic Commercial District.

You also will hear how an enormous mid-20th-century urban renewal project nearly destroyed East Liberty, and see how redevelopment in the last fifteen years has rectified some of the earlier project’s tragic mistakes. Juxtaposing traces of East Liberty’s various transformations with a church whose successive buildings have occupied the same site since 1819, the tour will give participants a new appreciation for this resilient neighborhood.

Tour meeting point:  Trade Street, in front of Motor Square Garden, 5900 Baum Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15206. Meet on the sidewalk.

Tour ending point:  East Liberty Presbyterian Church, 116 S. Highland Avenue, Pittsburgh
