In the past dozen or so years, Wood Street has experienced many changes and improvements. Extending from what was once a cobblestoned wharf on the Monongahela River to Liberty Avenue, the street has hosted all manner of commerce and trade since the early 19th century—from a paper manufacturer, to the “Bathtub King of Pittsburgh,” to a former bank that now houses a public transit station and art gallery. Today’s Wood Street is the product of three principal influences: a growing university, a large financial institution, and concerted, ongoing historic preservation efforts by PHLF and others. The varied scales and styles of buildings along this artery provide a first-rate architectural experience. And while other PHLF tours have touched on some of the buildings along Wood Street, this exploration of its entirety will provide insights into some aspects of the City’s history that are less-well-remembered.
