Andrew Carnegie’s greatest cultural legacy to the United States is the 1800 libraries whose construction he funded. Money for operating the buildings, however, was another matter: Carnegie left resources for running them to only four communities, all in the Pittsburgh region. The Carnegie Free Library of Duquesne was demolished in 1968, but the Braddock Carnegie Library (1889), Carnegie Library of Homestead (1898), and Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall (1901) survive. All three are housed in impressive architectural landmarks that were designed to be centers of their industrial communities. As those towns declined in the late 20th century, their libraries also experienced great financial hardship.

Today, the three libraries are again thriving community hubs, thanks to extensive architectural restorations that have been guided by determined leaders, carried out by sensitive architects and contractors, and funded in part by the very people who use the buildings. Join us for this incomparable tour, on which each library’s director will share stories about the challenges and triumphs of restoring these splendid structures and how the libraries’ continuing operation is being ensured.

Tour meeting point: Station Square, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Instructions for parking and meeting the bus will be provided to registrants in advance of the tour. The bus will depart at 9:00 a.m. sharp.

Tour ending point: Station Square, by 2:00 p.m.

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time.

Accessibility: The libraries are located on hilly terrain, and the bus on which we will travel has steps that might be difficult to navigate with assistive equipment. The bus is not equipped for wheelchair access.
