In recognition of America’s 250th birthday, join us for a special tour, in which we explore the roots of America, through the travails of one of our nation’s most consequential founding fathers George Washington, who came through our land on two significant expeditions, long before it would become the city of Pittsburgh in the United States of America.

Perhaps one of Washington’s most complicated relationships on his journeys through here, in 1753 and 1784, was his relationship with the Native American leader Guyasuta (or Kayahsota). Even though Guyasuta acted as Washington’s guide in 1753, the two men found themselves on opposite sides in the French and Indian War (or Seven Years War) of 1754 to 1763. Notwithstanding their differences, they were still able to come together through mutual respect, an expression of humanity that is memorialized in a 2006 sculpture that sits on Mt. Washington — James A. West’s Point of View.

The sculpture and its location atop Mount Washington invite us to take in the view of the Point, where Pittsburgh’s history as a city starts in 1758. After learning about Washington, Guyasuta, and the creation of the statue that honors them, you will hear how what started as a town of a few hundred people physically evolved to fill and then expand beyond the rivers and mountains that define one of America’s most historically significant cities.

Tour meeting point:  Point of View Park, 1435 Grandview Avenue, Pittsburgh 15211

Tour ending point:  Same as starting point

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time in order to ensure that the tour gets underway on time.

Parking: Street parking in Mount Washington is available. There is also a paid parking lot in the 1200 block of Grandview Avenue, across from the upper station of the Duquesne Incline, about a two-block walk from the tour’s starting point. Participants also can park in the lot at the Incline’s lower station, at 1197 West Carson Street.

Accessibility: Point of View Park is at the edge of Mount Washington. Although it is wheelchair accessible, the site is rather tight and slightly sloped.

All tour participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Children under the age of 13 may attend tours free of charge. By purchasing a ticket for this tour, you acknowledge that you are physically able to undertake the tour, assume all personal risk during the tour, consent to being photographed during the tour, and permit PHLF to use your image in our communications.
