This fall, the University of Pittsburgh is celebrating the 100th anniversary of groundbreaking for the Cathedral of Learning (Charles Klauder, 1926-1937). Although it is by far the most visible structure in Oakland, the Cathedral is but one of numerous architectural gems in the City of Pittsburgh’s Oakland Civic Center Historic District. Our tour will encompass the core of this historic district and make a circle around the block occupied by the Cathedral to learn about the institutional structures that give Oakland much of its identity.

Our exploration will culminate at the Cathedral of Learning, where we will visit select interior spaces that are not open to the public. Our special guest for this part of the tour will be Dr. Drew Armstrong, Associate Professor of Architectural History and Director of Architectural Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Armstrong will share some of the intriguing insights and discoveries he has made in two decades of observing and studying this extraordinary example of campus architecture.

Please note that this tour does not include the Nationality Rooms.
