But the Courthouse was built on what was left of Grant’s Hill. In 1912, that’s 96 years ago, the Hill was lowered for the last time so the street would be level with the rest of downtown Pittsburgh. This photo shows how workmen dug away the land and revealed the bottoms of the buildings that had been hidden underground. Workmen built railroad tracks so the railroad cars could be filled with the dirt and easily hauled away.
