Look up at the ceiling in the City-County Building hallway. Find four things: (1) the City shield, (2) County shield, (3) a pattern of leaves, and (4) a pattern that looks like a maze. That is called a fret or key pattern. The ancient Greeks and Romans used this pattern. You will see the fret design on other Pittsburgh buildings: sometimes it is on the outside of a building; sometimes it is inside.
