Correct! Osterling grew up in Manchester on Pittsburgh's North Side. He learned about building from his father who was a carpenter and by serving as an apprentice to an architect. When he was 23 years old he opened his own business and won the competition to design the high school for the City of Allegheny. (The high school building he designed is now demolished, although the red brick addition of the high school he designed in 1904 is still standing.)
