Mattress Factory: Behind-the-Scenes Walking Tour

Join us for a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the Mattress Factory, located in an industrial building of 1900 that became a former Stearns & Foster mattress warehouse. Curator Michael Olijnyk and Education Director Shannon Berkheiser will discuss how the Mattress Factory chooses and houses artists, mounts exhibits, educates school children, and interacts with the Mexican War Streets neighborhood.
Since its founding in 1977, the Mattress Factory has been a catalyst for community revitalization on Pittsburgh’s North Side, renovating nine properties in the Mexican War Streets area. The contemporary art museum and experimental lab features site-specific installations created by artists-in-residence from around the world. PHLF has worked closely with the Mattress Factory since its inception, and has aided its restoration and expansion efforts through its Preservation Loan Fund.
Participants are welcome to come early or stay after the tour to explore the museum.
